K-12 District

Bellridge Unified School District

8th Grade Mathematics Fall 2024 3 classrooms, 87 students

Context

Bellridge ran an 8th grade algebra pilot with incoming students who had a wide range of foundational math knowledge. The teacher observed that students who struggled on fractions and ratio problems in previous years showed consistent gaps at the start of linear equations units.

Challenge

With 87 students across three sections, the teacher had no reliable way to identify which specific students were missing prerequisite concepts before the new unit began. The standard diagnostic took class time and produced results that arrived too late to change the week's plan.

What changed

Within two weeks of deploying Adaptcourse, the prerequisite gap detection surfaced 34 students with specific gaps in rational number operations. The teacher was able to schedule targeted small-group sessions before the algebra unit started, shifting intervention from reactive to proactive.

Observed outcome

The teacher described a change in workflow: planning time shifted from reviewing quiz scores to reviewing live gap reports. Intervention sessions were scheduled earlier in the unit cycle. Teacher reported less time spent on whole-class re-teaching of prerequisite concepts at the unit midpoint.

Skillpath Learning

JavaScript Fundamentals Track Spring 2025 REST API integration

Context

Skillpath Learning, an online course provider for software development training, had a JavaScript fundamentals track with consistently high dropout at two specific modules: closures and asynchronous callbacks. These modules attracted the same abandonment pattern every cohort.

Challenge

The content team suspected that learners were hitting closures without a strong enough grasp of scope and function context. But they had no question-level data to confirm the hypothesis. Completion rate data showed the dropout location but not the cause.

What changed

Skillpath integrated the Adaptcourse REST API over three days. The engine was configured with their existing question bank mapped into a content graph that included prerequisite edges from scope and context nodes to closures. Learners who showed gaps at scope were rerouted before reaching the closures module.

Observed outcome

The closures dropout pattern shifted in the first cohort. Per-question response data confirmed the team's hypothesis: learners who had strong scope responses moved through closures with fewer incorrect attempts. Content team used the response data to add three new scope reinforcement questions to the graph.

Community College

Crestview Community College

Developmental Math Bridge Program Fall 2024 to Spring 2025 LTI 1.3 embed via Canvas

Context

Crestview's developmental math bridge program supports incoming students who place below college-level math on placement assessments. The program runs over two semesters and aims to bring students to calculus readiness from mixed starting points ranging from pre-algebra to pre-calculus.

Challenge

The span of prerequisite gaps across the cohort was wide. Some students had solid algebra but gaps in trigonometry. Others had gaps much earlier in rational arithmetic. A fixed-pace bridge sequence could not serve both groups without one group being drastically under or over-challenged.

What changed

Adaptcourse was embedded via LTI 1.3 into the program's existing Canvas instance. The content graph was mapped against the program's existing question bank with prerequisite edges defined by the math coordinator. Each student's entry point into the graph was set by their placement score, then updated dynamically as sessions progressed.

Observed outcome

Students with early gaps were not bottlenecked by students who needed only the later material. Instructors reported spending office hours on specific flagged gaps rather than broad topic review. By end of the spring semester, a higher proportion of the cohort was on-track for college-level placement than in the prior year's cohort with the fixed sequence.
